How Often Should You Test Your AD Recovery Plan? (And What Your RTO Really Means)

A recovery plan that has never been tested is a theory, not a plan. Industry best practices recommend testing Active Directory recovery at least twice each year to verify that backups are usable, runbooks are accurate, and recovery objectives can actually be achieved.

Your Recovery Time Objective (RTO) is the maximum downtime your organization can tolerate. Manual forest recovery routinely takes days — far beyond most stated RTOs. If your documented RTO is 4 hours but your last manual test took 36, you don't have a recovery plan; you have a liability.

The reason most organizations don't test is cost: manual recovery testing ties up senior engineers for days. Automation changes that equation entirely. With AD-Phoenix©, recovery tests can be scheduled to run fully unattended — one-time or recurring — producing documented evidence of recovery readiness for auditors and cyber insurance providers.

Test twice a year at minimum. Test after every major AD change ideally. And make sure the results are logged, because proving you can recover is almost as important as being able to.
